Sophisticated Baby Girl Nursery/Guest Room Tour

Before we start, I want to thank those of you who sent well-wishes on Facebook and Instagram at the announcement of Baby Girl's arrival. I had planned to finish editing photos and post this room reveal last Friday, but she decided that was her birthday. :) So after a week of resting, soaking up baby snuggles, and adjusting to life as a family of four, I'm finally ready to share a tour of the Nursery/Guest Room...

Squeal!!

The Nursery. Is. Done.

Well, not exactly. But it's as done as it needed to be before Baby Girl's arrival.

There are definitely still some finishing touches I'd love to see (more about that at the end of this post). However, I know my limitations, and at this point I'm pleased enough with the progress I've made to leave it the way it is for now.

Before

Under construction: Goodbye carpet and green walls, hello beautiful laminate and paint!

Before we started this nursery project, the room was the definition of unfinished. The walls were green from the previous owners and the carpet was disgusting (including a light bulb burn in the middle of the floor).

This room was where my in-laws would sleep when they visited, but they obviously didn't come for the sleeping accommodations. Sure, there was a spare dresser and a full bed in there, but it hardly qualified as a guest room. The bedding was mis-matched and the "curtain" was something I just rigged up out of some scrap fabric and clip rings.

Shockingly, I don't have pictures of that mess.

And then it became the storage room during our big flooring project upstairs.

Let's just say that this room was in need of some serious TLC. We started with those new floors and a fresh coat of paint, and then it was time to turn this blank slate into sophisticated baby girl nursery.

The Inspiration

With a blank canvas of gray on the walls, I used my inspiration fabric to set my color scheme: navy with coral, pink, turquoise, white and gold accents. Before I even found an inspiration fabric, I knew I wanted the main color to be a sophisticated navy, so I chose both a comforter and curtains in that color. Then I set to work adding in my accents of coral, pink, turquoise, and gold to add that feminine touch.

I know I've been pretty quiet about the nursery. Other than the color scheme and coral and gold stencil pillow (made for under $8!), I've been silent. One thing I've learned about myself is that when I get into a project, I have a singular focus. I have to get it done as soon as possible. So, while I may have been silent, it was because I was so focused on doing that I didn't spend any time blogging.

But worry not - in the next few weeks, I have several projects, details, and tutorials to share with you! So, without further ado, here are some pictures of the nursery.

Welcome to the Nursery!

When you walk in the door, the dresser is against the wall to the left with the closet next to it. The crib is directly to the right, and the bed is in front of you, against the right-hand wall. The lone window is on the far wall behind the bed.

The dresser doubles as the changing table. My original goal was for it to be painted, but it had to take a back seat to our big flooring project on the second floor. My goal is still to get it painted white in the next few months and add some gold hardware.

Above the changing table is my "mini gallery wall," featuring the art my mom, sister, and sister-in-law made (LOVE them!), plus a golden "E" and a quick little ruffle mirror I whipped together using some materials I had on hand.

I plan to display baby headbands on the memo board. I just need to pick up some small clothespins to hang them up there.

On the far wall is the room's only window. I love all those beautiful sheer curtains used in baby girl nurseries, but for me, function was key, especially since there are no blinds in the room. I dressed up plain navy black-out curtains with a ruffle detail, and I love the way they turned out! It was a really inexpensive and relatively easy way to add some feminine charm to the nursery.

In front of the window is the guest bed. For bedding I chose a very simple and budget-friendly navy quilt and sewed some simple pillows to make it more feminine. My mom had bought the coral colored fleece blanket for another project, but when she realized it was perfect for the nursery, she donated it to the cause. I laid it at the foot of the bed and pinned some simple ruffle flowers to the corners to give it that little extra "something" that it needed so it didn't look so plain. I'll be sharing a simple tutorial for making your own ruffle flowers soon.

Finally, above the bed are some prints I designed just for the room. I love the way they turned out, and I'll be sharing them as a free printable download in the future. For now, they're just taped to the wall because I haven't gotten a chance to pick up gold frames. But since I was in nesting mode last week, I had to have them up on the wall. As soon as I get the frames, I will hang them properly, and probably a little lower than they're taped up there now.

Rounding the final corner of the room, we reach the rocker and crib. I made a super-simple and inexpensive crib skirt (tutorial to come), but it was a little plain by itself. Some ruffle flowers made all the difference. And above the crib is some fun and simple geometric art that Kiddo made to hang in his baby sister's room. He was so excited to make them that he has asked to make one for his room and for Mommy and Daddy's room too!

Still to Do

So, there is the nursery in its almost-finished state. While it functions just fine for now, there are still a few things I would like to do:
  • Gold frames for the prints above the bed.
  • Painting the dresser white and adding gold hardware (possibly painting the original knobs with gold paint).
  • Bedside tables. I am still on the hunt for some perfect (cute and reasonably priced) tables for either side of the bed. I already have hand-me-down milk glass lamps to place on them, and I'm anxious to add them to the room.
  • Possibly cushions for the rocker. My sewing-talented mother-in-law will be visiting for the weekend and my mom gave me fun some polka-dot fabric that I could use... What do you think?

More To Come!

As I said, you can expect more details on the nursery in the coming weeks. I'll be sharing some tutorials, a budget breakdown, and a few other goodies along the way.

I have thoroughly enjoyed designing this space. The beauty of a nursery is that it's an excuse to completely redo a room (or in my case to complete an unfinished room). And since there's a clear deadline, I'm motivated to complete it in a timely fashion (which is not my strong point). Plus, who doesn't love all those cute baby touches?

I hope you enjoyed the tour of our Nursery/Guest Room as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you!
